Increasing numbers of concerned citizens are talking about the importance of many environmental issues facing our world today. We wonder how much effect we can have, as individuals; what can we do?. In the area of renovating our existing home or building a new one, we have the ability to make a big difference to the environment by building in an eco-friendly, sustainable and environmentally-safe fashion.

It is this concern over the state of the environment that is driving more homeowners and builders to look for alternate methods of renovation that will be better for the planet. The growing interest in environmental building stems for the growing realization of the effect that chemicals and toxins have on the environment as well as ourselves. They are aware that humans are accelerating global warming by the continued growth in burning fossil fuels.

New eco-friendly homes are being built using new technology. While it is still a slightly more expensive way to build or renovate, most people focus on the long-term benefits to them and their families and are prepared to pay the price. There will be increasing numbers of products available as the technology advances, and then the costs will fall.

New companies are starting up, specializing in this new technology, to provide builders and renovators with “green” products. As more products are developed, the prices will drop. To find companies whose products are eco-friendly, search online or ask at your local hardware store. When looking for green technology, look for building products that are not chemically treated and those that have been grown and harvested in an eco-friendly manner. Paint is now available without the very nasty volatile organic compounds, known as VOCs.

Using recycled timber is an excellent re-use of resources and will help lower your costs and save more trees. Look for building timber that has not been chemically treated and is certified by local forestry authorities.

You will need to search out the eco-friendly building products as they are not yet as freely available as traditional products. Don’t be taken in by expensive products, continue to research and find cheaper alternatives to help to keep your costs down. Building and renovating with the planet in mind may be more expensive, so you need to look around for the best deals.

There are other ways you can build an eco-friendly home apart from using “green” materials. When looking at your design, focus on letting natural into the house and this will save power and lighting costs. Consider also the position of the building, to make the most of prevailing cooling breezes in summer and natural warming sunshine in winter. Good garden planning will help you have wind breaks, winter sun and summer shade for the house.

Solar energy is another way of saving power costs and helping the planet at the same time. Installing insulation in both walls and ceiling will help with internal temperature control and save you energy costs for heating and cooling.
